The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Implications for Lawyers & Law Firms

Date: Thursday, October 17, 2013 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM
Venue: Minnesota State Bar Association  Minneapolis, MN United States   Get Directions
$25.00

The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights are a global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse impacts on human rights linked to business activity.  Law firms will want to ensure that as businesses they comply with the Guiding Principles. In addition, the Guiding Principles are affecting how their clients do business. The principles are being reflected in government procurement requirements and various legislative measures, such as section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act, and the US Reporting Requirements on Responsible Investment in Burma. The International Finance Corporation and financial institutions have incorporated human rights principles into their project finance requirements. Moreover, businesses themselves are publicly expressing their commitment to respect the Guiding Principles. Therefore, law firms will need to be able to provide up-to-date and comprehensive information about the applicability of human rights principles to their business clients.

Presenter:
Dr. Corinne Lewis, a partner in the Brussels-based law firm Lex Justi (www.lexjusti.com), practices in the area of businesses' respect for human rights.  She provides legal advice, consultation and training to a range of clients, including law firms, multi-national companies and international and nongovernmental organizations.  She brings to her work both a corporate law background, as in-house counsel with a major multi-national company, and international human rights law experience with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  She has taught human rights law and public international law courses and has lived and worked in the U.S. and various countries in Asia and Europe.  She writes, speaks and publishes regularly on business and human rights.  In addition to a Ph.D. in law from the London School of Economics, Dr. Lewis has an LL.M. (with honors) from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Indiana University.
