What Non-Criminal Attorneys Need to Know about DWI Law: How to Get Your Clients the Best Help

Date: Monday, April 28, 2014 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM
Venue: Minnesota State Bar Association  Minneapolis, MN United States   Get Directions
$30.00

Sooner or later, a client or friend will get stopped for a DWI, or have a son or daughter who will.  They'll call the only attorney they know: YOU!  What do you do?  Should you answer their questions yourself?  Should they just take the test and deal with the rest later?  What can a defense attorney do for them anyway?  What if the police are holding the driver in jail pending a bail hearing?  How do you get them out now?

A panel of experienced attorneys who have handled hundreds of DWIs will explain all the things a driver needs to know when the police stop a driver and demand a test, as well as what to do after charges are issued.  Learn how to help clients avoid accidental test refusal charges (choosing a blood test is not always a safe option!), how much time they get to contact a defense attorney before having to take the test or refuse, ethical traps in what you say to a driver about consenting to the test, what the deadlines are that drivers must deal with promptly after they are released, and much, much more!
